Equatorial Restaurant first opened its door for business in September, 2007. Since then this fine dining Chinese cuisine restaurant has attracted many customers especially the local inhabitants of Kota Kinabalu. The restaurant is made up of three shop units which covered about an area of three thousand square feet. Once inside the restaurant, guests will be greeted with a spacious, bright and cold atmosphere. The table setting and interior design are typical of the many Chinese restaurants found in Malaysia. For cleanliness this restaurant received an “A” grade from the Kota Kinabalu Municipal council, which speaks volume for its housekeeping.
Crispy Pork Leg, crocodile meat and salted steamed chicken are the popular dishes highly recommended by the chef here. During special holidays the crispy pork leg and salted steamed chicken have to be ordered in advance to avoid any disappointment. The waitress explained that the salted steamed chicken is garden chicken instead of the farm chicken. The difference here is that the garden chickens (Lau Shiu Kai) are fed with corns and are allowed to grow for four months before being put under the knife. While the farm chickens are fed with industry mixed feed and have only 72 days to live before they are slaughtered. Verdict: the garden chickens have firm and juicy meat and the farm chickens are soft and plain. A whole salted steamed chicken can be served up to ten persons. If one comes in a smaller group of four to six persons, a half size chicken would be just right.
Crocodile meat is a bit unusual, but do not be put off by that, it does have a very nice taste. Here the crocodile meat rather white in colour is fried with ginger and onion. The crispy pork leg a favourite among the Chinese can serve four to six persons. If one likes the pork leg with juicy gravy then the steamed pork leg will be a good alternative.
Other dishes include fish, mutton, prawns, crabs and vegetables are also available. Most of these dishes come in three sizes ranging from small, medium to large. Guests can choose from the portion that suits them best, depending on the number of persons and preference. For dessert guests have a number of choices too. The simple coconut pudding, the tasty mango pudding, and the delicious mixed fruit platter are just some of the desserts available.

Located on the ground floor of the Plaza Tanjung Aru building, the Equatorial Restaurant has twenty seven big and small tables. For wedding and special functions the place can fit in about twenty two large tables. The table setting here is clean and tidy. The high class guests will appreciate the quality cutleries used here. The room is brightly lit and is also air-conditioned. For guests who can afford RM 500 and above per table, they are invited to the VIP room which is located on the block behind. This VIP room has just eight tables.

How to go there? From Kota Kinabalu downtown take the coastal highway south towards the airport. Upon reaching the Tanjung Aru flyover turn right to Jalan Mat Saleh road which leads to the Tanjung Aru Beach. Drive another kilometre and one will reach a roundabout. Drive straight forward and less than a hundred metres after the roundabout turn right which will take one to the Plaza Tanjung Aru Building. Equatorial Restaurant is located right in front of the parking counter.
