Yu Cheng Restaurant

Surrounded by a friendly neighbourhood and hidden from the major roads at Luyang, Yu Cheng Restaurant is a treasure waiting to be discovered. Although it is unknown to the outsiders, friends and the nearby residents have been coming here for the past five years. The foods offered here are purely home style Chinese cooking. Many customers said that the foods here are even better than many of the big name restaurants in Kota Kinabalu. While waiting for your dishes, it is not unusual to smell food with wonderful aroma coming out from the kitchen. Run by a friendly couples and a small number of staffs, the restaurant manages rather well, although at times, one does have to wait a bit if the place is full. Yu Cheng Restaurant also caters for private functions such as parties, seminars, etc.

Yu Cheng Restaurant has only one menu and it is displayed on a long board located high on the ceiling. If you don’t read Chinese then you probably run out of luck. But do not worry, the friendly captain will help you on your orders. Like many Malaysian Chinese she can communicate with the three major languages, English, Malay and Mandarin. The main ingredients offered at the restaurant are beef, chicken, lamb, fish, pork, prawn and the less encountered venison. The claypot bean curd, curry beef, deep fried prawn roll, and mandarin pork are some of the must try dishes here. Assam fish head and lemon chicken are also high on most customers’ list. Various fresh vegetables depending on availability on the local markets can also be ordered. Apart from the common local drinks, a few selections of beer are also served here.

The interior of the restaurant can be described as those of the 70’s. With long white fluorescent¬†tubes for the lighting, and the walls are covered with some old pictures of Jesselton and Sandakan , as well as quite a few old currencies. This restaurant has just nine round tables and each table can only sit four. These nine tables are in the shop and along the walkway. A few tables are put out on the parking area if it is not a raining night. Although the design is simple and basic, the delicious food and the equally good price tag are going to bring customers back for more.

How to go there? From Kota Kinabalu take the Tuaran Road and turn into Kolam Road on the right by using the flyover at Nenas Hill. After passing two Petronas stations on your left, turn into Lorong Nibung and in about a hundred metres, Yu Cheng Restaurant will appear at the corner of a 3-storey shoplot.
