Normally the starting point is at the Puka village about 9km from the Kiulu town centre. Here participants will have to put on the required gears for safety reason. These include the helmet and the life jacket. Participants might also want to put on some sun screen lotion as this one and half hour journey will be under the strong glaring equatorial sun. After a short briefing on safety procedures, and some technique on the paddles, every one will be eager to get started.
The rubber inflated rafts can accommodate about six to eight persons, and each raft comes with two certified guides. Listen to these guides as they will be giving out instructions on how to overcome each individual rapid. Common commands like move left, move right, and go faster will be ringing in the participants’ ears. One wrong move on these rapids can throw everyone off board, although this is a rare occurrence, but it does happen. The kiulu river has about ten rapids challenging participants to overcome them. Some of these rapids have interesting names like Durain Rapid, Holy Smoke and Sweet Corner.
At a certain point of the river, participants are encouraged to jump off the rafts to enjoy some fun time on body surfing. Here one can surf with their own body weight while floating on the gentle current of the river. The water at Kiulu river is clear and clean, and one can see the glistering river shining with a thousand stars reflected from the sun light. As not every part of the river has rapids, whenever the journey slows down, one can take the time to absorb the picturesque surroundings. Passing under a few suspension bridges, pebbles and rocky shoreline, and the lush green forests on the rolling hills are just some of these views.
After experiencing through the seven kilometres of river and rapids under the tropical sun the journey comes to an end. At the ending point one will have to return the helmet and the life jacket to the operator. With a cool shower and a new dry set of clothing, it is time for lunch, a good source to replenish the much needed calories. While having lunch, relax and enjoy the quiet lifestyle of Kiulu. One hour later one will be transported back to KK city.
