Italians are famous for their pasta and pizza. Everywhere they go, they will bring these two popular foods with them. Mr. Salvatore Marcello, an Italian chef, came to Kota Kinabalu a few years ago, and he helped to set up an Italian restaurant called Bella Italia Pizzeria Ristorante Cafe at the historical Jesselton Hotel on Gaya Street. After completing the project, he started his own Italian restaurant called Ristorante Pizzeria Grazie Cafe at Wawasan Plaza. Today Grazie Cafe is the place where KK Lites go for carbonara, lasagna, pasta, and pizza with an original Italian flavour.
A glance at Grazie Cafe menu shows that all items are in Italian. Luckily for KK Lites below each item, there is an English explanation. The menu also reveals that pasta and pizza are the main offerings at Grazie Cafe.
As many as ten different pizzas are offered with two choices on size. Tomato sauce and Mozzarella cheese are the base for all pizzas here. A combination of different ingredients such as anchovy, beef bacon, mushroom, pepperoni beef, tuna and vegetables is used to make different types of pizzas. The small pizza is priced at RM 19.80 and the larger one at RM 24.80. Extra pizza’s topping like black olives, capers, eggs, onions, pineapple, and mixed vegetable are possible. Each extra topping cost RM 2.80. At Grazie Cafe clients can also watch how their pizzas are made. A large glass window allows clients to peek into the pizza making kitchen.
Thirteen types of pasta are found in the menu. These pastas come in three different cooking styles: the popular tomato sauce, the creamy white sauce, and the lesser known Aglio Olio sauce. Ingredients used in the pasta are quite similar to those used in pizza, minced beef, Shitake mushroom and shrimp are the extra ingredients. The carbonara and lasagna are the must try items. Pastas prices range from RM 16 to RM 24. For appertizer Grazie Cafe has chicken’s liver, deep fried squid, mixed salad, Shitake mushroom, and thin sliced yellow fin raw tuna, just to name a few. One should also check out the set dinner section. For drinks the popular Italian coffees in hot or cold like cappuccino, espresso and latte are offered. Beer, fresh juice, and soft drinks are also served here.
The interior of Grazie Cafe is very stylish by limiting the visible colours. Furnished with dark brown tables and chairs, installed with dark brown wooden flooring, and the wall and ceiling painted white, these are the main colours. Sparks of red, orange and beige are here and there which help to brighten the interior. It is also interesting to find a copy of the famous Mona Lisa art work hang on the wall. Half of the restaurant is opened to the out side areea which allows clients to enjoy the sea breeze blowing in from the sea. At night this place uses warm dim lights which create a very relaxing environment. The toilet at Grazie Cafe also received a 4-star award by the Kota Kinabalu Municipal Council, hope KK will have more eateries with toilets like this.
How to get there? Located on the southern side of Kota Kinabalu, Grazie Cafe is found inside the Wawasan Plaza, and situated next to the Tang Dynasty Hotel. Api Api centre along the coastal highway is another nearby commercial area to Grazie Cafe.
