Nature Lodge Kinabatangan was built near by the river, giving guests easy access to the river activities. It is built on a higher ground than the surrounding areas, which comes in handy during the raining season (January and February), as many of these places around the Kinabatangan river are flooded. Minimum trees are felled while building the lodges, guests can still see these proud trees standing tall in and around the lodges. Some of these buildings are erected to the tune of the space. The lodge office and dinning halls are located in the centre, just near the river, while the cabins and lodges are scattered around the office centre. The lodges also have good safety measure as the whole compound is surrounded by electric wired to deter wildlife from coming in, especially the wild Borneo pygmy elephants.
Nature Lodge Kinabatangan has knowledgeable guides to help guests to identify many species of birds and animals, while going for the river cruise or jungle trekking. The staffs are not only friendly and courteous, some of them are down right funny, very good entertainment especially when you are in the middle of the jungle. The lodge management employs most of it staffs from the surrounding area, like boatmen, guides, cooking staffs, and room cleaners and so on. Helping the locals, Orang Sungai, to understand about environment as well as giving them a job.
The accommodation at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan is divided into three types:
The Agamid Wing
There are a total of 12 units of Agamid Wing, with 4 units that can have 3 persons sharing. The bedding here is of three-star quality, and each room has an attached washroom with the luxury of having a hot shower. The windows are screened with anti mosquito mess, and fan is used for cooling off. A small veranda at the entrance of the lodge gives guests a good place to absorb the surrounding nature. The management is also very thoughtful as a few sockets are installed to the room, where guests can charge their batteries, for their cameras, video cameras, and phones.
Civet Wing has four units. The cabin is down right basic, with two beds, a fan, and an attached washroom without hot water though. But couples will get privacy. A veranda on the front door is very good for observing the out door.
The dormitory has a total of forty beds, which are separated in a few rooms. This is ideal for large group, like students and youth organisations, and the very budget conscious travellers. There is a wall fan in every room. The washroom with toilets and showers is located in another building.
The meal arrangement at Nature Lodge Kinabatangan is also well planned. Breakfast after returning from the early morning river cruise, while lunch is served immediately after coming back from the long oxbow lake walk. Dinner is served after returning from the late afternoon river cruise. Western and local style cooking are served here. The dining hall has no walls giving guests a close feeling with the forest. During dinner time selected wines are offered with price around RM 85 per bottle.
