This renovated colonial style English tea house was built in 1964, and it is surrounded by a beautiful 1.5 acres of perfectly manicured lawns. Situated at a hilltop also gives it an excellent view at the Sandakn town below, as well as the harbour and the Sandakan Bay. With a spectacular views like these, guests can easily relax with a cocktail in the garden or enjoy a wide selection of wines at the long bar. Dining tables and chairs setting are decorated in traditional colonial style. The atmosphere at English Tea house is among the best in Sandakan, or even in Borneo, especially so at night, when the temperature is lower.
What tea house is it, if it does not serve tea. So English Tea House has imported fine teas from around the world for guests to enjoy. For food, traditional English specialties, like scones, clotted cream, delicious cakes and pastries are served. Or guests can choose from a wide a la carte selection of Western food and selected Asian food. Its location and its atmosphere make this place a perfect setting for any corporate functions, events, and weddings. This house also has some interesting pre-war artifacts on display.

Just a short walk away from the English Tea House is the popular Agnes Keith House, which is very much worth a visit. Agnes Keith is the famous authoress who wrote the book, Land Below The Wind. The house was renovated in 2001 by Sabah Museum, and now open to the public.
How to get here? There are daily schedule flights and buses from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan. By flight, it is a 40 minutes journey from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Airlines has several flights to Sandakan daily, and budget airlines Air Asia has two flights per day. Air Asia also has direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan daily which will take about 3 hours. Buses from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan will take six hours, which is schedule through out the day. From Sandakan town centre one can take a taxi up the Istana road or take a 20 minutes walk on the stairway at the back of the Sandakan Municipal office.
