Baba & Nyonya Recipes Curry House

Baba Nyonya is a special group of people who has their origin traced back from the time when the great Admiral Cheng Ho of China sailed through the Malay penisular some six centuries ago. The inter-marriage of the Chinese sailors and the local Malay, whom we referred as Baba and Nyonya, started a new culture and heritage, and they also created the delicious Baba Nyonya cuisine. Baba Nyonya cuisine is a sort of fusion between the Chinese cuisine and the local Malay delicacy. Today the Baba Nyonya way of life can still be found in major cities like Malacca, Penang, and Singapore, which all lie on the busy Straits of Malacca. But the tasty Baba Nyonya cuisine has spread through out the region.

We KK Lites are able to savour this special Baba Nyonya cuisine, largely thanks to this nice little restaurant located at the Grand Millennium Plaza along the Penampang By-pass called Baba Nyonya Recipes Curry House. Grand Millennium Plaza is 6km away from Kota Kinabalu city. The owner explains that his Baba Nyonya recipes originated from the state of Malacca, and the way his restaurant prepares the food is completely halal. Popular Baba Nyonya food that can be ordered here are the Curry Fish Head, Assam Fish Head, Nyonya Steam Chicken, and Beef Rendang.

One must try the super delicious prawns at Baba Nyonya Recipes Curry House. These prawns are specially prepared with supplies from the nearby farms. There are a few different prawn dishes to choose from, namely sambal prawns, black & pepper prawns, sweet & sour prawns, and butter prawns. We chose the butter prawns, where the prawns were cooked to a bright red, and sizzled with thin golden strips of butter, and the verdict is finger licking good.

Many dishes of the Baba Nyonya cuisine are prepared with special spices like assam, belacan, curry and sambal. Sambal cutterfish, curry chicken, kang kong belacan, and pakis belacan, are some of the dishes prepared this way. Apart from prawns, the seafood items include crab, cutterfish, and fish. For meat there are beef and chicken. Vegetable, to-fu, soup and dessert are also available. Simple local delight like fried noodle, nyonya fried be-hon, and Wan Tan Ho can be ordered too. Lastly one can also try the Nasi Lemak, which comes with cucumber slices, boiled egg, ikan belis, and nuts. One can order just a simple plain Nasi Lemak or spice it up with beef or chicken rendang for extra oomph.

Price for Nasi Lemak starts from RM 3, while fried noodle starts at RM 6, small dishes start from RM 8 and large dishes start from RM 12. This restaurant also provides catering services.
