Once I heard my mother’s friend, whom I called auntie Maureen, mentions, if one visits Tamparuli but did not visit Wun Chiap Restaurant, it is the same as one did not visit Tamparuli at all. Guess that’s how much we kklites like this small restaurant at foothill of Mt. Kinabalu.

Salut Seafood Restaurant

Travel along Jalan Sulaman highway, after some 20 to 30 minutes from Kota Kinabalu City, one is going to pass by Salut seafood restaurant. Since it is quite out of the way for us KK Lites, this seafood restaurant is like a hidden gem. The price of seafood here is much cheaper compare with the other big seafood restaurants in the city. Tourists can get here by taxi, no buses come up to this place yet. Taxi from KK to Salut costs RM 60 one way, and Taxi from Rasa Ria Resort to Salut costs RM 30 one way.

look out for these Giant Clams

With these giant clams lining up the entrance of Salut Seafood Restuarant, surely this is good Feng Shui. Good Feng Shui equals Good fortune, an ancients Chinese’s believe. Here the good fortune is translated into real life too, as Salut Seafood Restaurant has grown from a small outpost restaurant with some 20 tables to about 100 tables restaurant now. Yet it still maintains the simple out look of it humble beginning, hence the continue of the cheaper price.

Komplex Karamunsing

Awaken of the Sleepy Giant
Being one of the biggest shopping complex in Kota Kinabalu, Komplex Karamunsing did not have many good time in term of business volume, for the past 10 years or so. There was just nothing excited about the place, no big name brands and no interesting stores to attract shoppers. Today all that has changed. With a new management team creating new retailing space, and attracting big name retail stores, the whole atmosphere in Komplex Karamunsing has turn dramaticaly. Shoppers are coming now and in turn more retailers are opening up new stores there.

Coffee Culture from Abroad

Not so long ago, when we, KKlites, want to have a good cup of coffee, we would just visit our good old Kopitiams. Then we have only two choices to make, namely Kopi O, which is a cup of hot coffee or Kopi Ping, which is coffee with ice cubes. Both of these are priced under RM 2.00 to this day. Since last year that situation has changed dramaticly with the invasion of the gournmet coffee companies from abroad. Today we have Starbucks Coffee, Coffee Beans and Teas, and San Francisco Cafe, and I believe more cafes will be opening up soon in other new Shopping Malls. Thanks to these cafes we KKlites have to thinkle a bit when ordering our coffee this day, since we have more choices now, not just Kopi O and Kopi Ping.

Popular coffee drink from these cafe joints are Latte, Ice Latte, Mocha Iced Blended, just to name a few. If you need a surprise, go for “Coffee of the day”, and the drinks come with 3 different sizes too.

Kota Kinabalu City

Kota Kinabalu, dub the Rainforest City, is undoubtably the most alive and active city in the whole of Borneo island. Everything is packed within 10km of the city radius. Hotels, Resorts, Malls, shopping centres are just a stone throw away from each others, and the Airport is only about 6km from the City. Nightlife in KK is definitely the finest in Borneo, Pubs, disco, cafe, restaurants lot of places for the party animals to last until the wee hours in the morning. A wide variety of foods from different cultures can be found here too, Chinese, Western, Japanese and local are a plenty. Seafood restaurants are hot venue here, night after night I see tons of Local and tourist alike willing to pack up this places and they left with a happy price tag too.
